Engineering is everywhere
Engineering is everywhere. Bridges, power stations, oil rigs, shipping and aircraft are all traditional examples of engineering that serve us daily, but engineering is so much more than this – it plays an essential role in every aspect of our life.
Engineering delivers the smart phone you use to wake you up in the morning and catch up on the overnight news. It creates 3D printers, X-Ray machines, MRI scanners and prosthetic limbs. It produces next generation telescopes to help us understand where we came from and develops crop technology to allow us to keep going.
There are half a million engineering employers in the UK who contribute nearly 25% of national turnover. One in six workers is employed by these engineering businesses. There are over two million engineers and technicians, representing 6% of the UK workforce.
Every day we entrust our health and personal safety to products and applications developed by engineers and technicians, so it is vital to ensure their decisions are based on sound principles and a wide knowledge of practice.
The Engineering Council is the regulatory body for the UK engineering profession. We work with 35 engineering institutions that have interests in specific sectors or branches of engineering, to set and maintain internationally recognised standards of competence and commitment. We hold a register of just under a quarter of a million professionally registered engineers and technicians, 18% of them reside overseas.
Our brand is synonymous with confidence:
Confidence in the quality of the knowledge, understanding and skills held by all those who have made the commitment to become professionally registered;Confidence that they are committed to maintaining their competence throughout their careers
For those with aspiration and ambition we have set out an achievement cycle that reflects professional development pathways that can be followed by all, whether starting out or progressing their careers:
